Is Jaffna worth visiting on a first trip to Sri Lanka?
Jaffna offers a unique cultural contrast to the rest of Sri Lanka, but it requires extra travel time.
Jaffna is absolutely worth visiting if you are interested in deep culture, history, and a less touristy experience. It offers a distinct Tamil culture, incredible Hindu temples like Nallur Kandaswamy, and unique cuisine. However, for a first-time visitor with only 7-10 days, it might be too far north to fit comfortably into a standard itinerary that includes the Cultural Triangle, Hill Country, and southern beaches. If you have 14 days or more, or if you prefer off-the-beaten-path destinations, adding Jaffna is highly recommended.
