Accommodation and transport

Responsible travel

Wild animals should be watched quietly and from a safe distance. This itinerary does not include elephant riding, animal bathing, touching, or staged wildlife contact. The safari and whale-watching trips follow local park, marine, and weather rules, and sightings can never be guaranteed.

Good to know

  • The Day 1 program works best with a morning arrival. A late flight may require the Pinnawala stop to be changed.

  • Train seats and departure times are controlled by Sri Lanka Railways. If the planned train is unavailable, travel to Ella will continue by road.

  • Whale watching usually operates during the main Mirissa season from November to April, but trips depend on sea conditions and official clearance.

  • Sigiriya, Little Adam’s Peak, and Nine Arch Bridge require walking. Sigiriya includes many stairs.

  • Wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees at temples. Shoes and hats must be removed before entering shrine areas.

  • The Colombo program on Day 7 depends on the time of the departing flight.

Price

The tour starts from US$690 per person when two guests share a double or twin room. The final price may change with travel dates, room availability, and requested changes.

Day-by-day route

Day 1

Airport Arrival, Pinnawala and Sigiriya

Meet your driver-guide at Bandaranaike International Airport. Travel inland and stop at Pinnawala to observe elephants from the public viewing areas and learn about the facility. Continue to Sigiriya, check in, and rest after the journey. This program requires an arrival early enough to reach Pinnawala during opening hours. Overnight in Sigiriya.

Day 2

Sigiriya, Dambulla, Matale and Kandy

Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress early in the morning, before the strongest heat. See the ancient gardens, frescoes, Mirror Wall, Lion’s Paw entrance, and views from the summit. Continue to Dambulla Cave Temple, known for its Buddha statues and painted cave interiors. Stop at a spice garden, with no purchase required, and visit Matale Muthumariamman Temple before reaching Kandy. In the evening, visit the Temple of the Tooth and watch a traditional Kandyan cultural show. Overnight in Kandy.

Day 3

Kandy, Tea Country and Scenic Train to Ella

Leave Kandy and travel into the central highlands. Stop at Ramboda Falls and visit a tea factory near Labookellie to learn how Sri Lankan tea is made and enjoy a tasting. Continue through Nuwara Eliya, with time near Gregory Lake and the historic post office when the schedule allows. Transfer to Nanu Oya station and take the scenic train to Ella through tea estates, valleys, and mountain villages. Train travel is subject to railway operation and seat availability. Overnight in Ella.

Day 4

Ella Highlights and Yala Safari

Start early with walks to Little Adam’s Peak and Nine Arch Bridge. Both places offer wide hill-country views, but the paths can be uneven or slippery after rain. Leave Ella and stop at Ravana Falls before travelling toward Yala. Join an afternoon jeep safari in Yala National Park to look for elephants, deer, crocodiles, monkeys, birds, and other wildlife. Leopards and other animals are never guaranteed. Overnight near Yala.

Day 5

Yala to Mirissa

Travel from the Yala area to Mirissa on the south coast. Visit Coconut Tree Hill when access and weather conditions are suitable, see the waterfront, and observe daily life near the local fishing area. Spend the rest of the day relaxing on Mirissa Beach or walking through the town. Overnight in Mirissa.

Day 6

Whale Watching, Galle, Madu River and Bentota

Leave early for a seasonal whale-watching trip from Mirissa, subject to safe sea conditions and operator clearance. Marine wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Continue to the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort for a guided walk through its historic streets and ramparts. Visit a turtle conservation centre, then travel to Balapitiya for a boat ride through the Madu River wetlands and islands. Continue to Bentota for the night. This is a full day, so the order may change if the boat trip runs late. Overnight in Bentota.

Day 7

Bentota, Colombo and Departure

After breakfast, travel to Colombo. If the flight time allows, visit Gangaramaya Temple, Beira Lake, Galle Face Green, and the Old Dutch Hospital area. Finish with a transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport or a hotel in Colombo. No accommodation is included after the final drop-off.
