Sri Lanka 8 Day Tour (7 Nights)

Discover Sri Lanka’s ancient cities, hill country, wildlife, beaches, and Galle Fort on a private 8-day journey. The package includes seven nights of accommodation, private transport, half-board meals, major entrance fees, a scenic train journey, and one Yala safari.

About This Tour

This private 8-day tour brings together many of Sri Lanka’s best-known places in one well-planned route. Start at the airport and travel through Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla, Kandy, Ella, Yala, Mirissa, and Galle before returning to Colombo or Bandaranaike International Airport.

The journey includes ancient temples and royal cities, green tea country, a scenic train ride, a wildlife safari, and time beside the Indian Ocean. You will travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a local driver-guide, so the daily pace can be adjusted when practical.

Tour Route

Airport to Sigiriya for two nights, Kandy for two nights, Ella for one night, the Yala area for one night, and Mirissa for one night. On the final day, visit Galle Fort before travelling to Colombo or the airport.

Main Highlights

  • Climb the ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress and see its gardens, frescoes, and wide views.

  • Explore the royal ruins and stone statues of Polonnaruwa.

  • Visit the Buddhist cave shrines and murals at Dambulla.

  • See the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Peradeniya Botanical Gardens in Kandy.

  • Travel through tea estates and mountain scenery by train from Kandy to Ella.

  • Join one jeep safari in Yala National Park and look for elephants, deer, crocodiles, monkeys, birds, and other wildlife.

  • Relax beside the sea in Mirissa.

  • Walk along the ramparts and old streets of Galle Fort.

Travel Style

This is a private tour for up to eight guests. It includes a private air-conditioned vehicle for road travel and an English-speaking driver-guide. Other guide languages can be requested but depend on availability.

Sigiriya and Dambulla have many steps and uneven surfaces. Comfortable shoes are recommended. Shoulders and knees must be covered at Buddhist temples, and shoes and hats must be removed before entering shrine areas.

Accommodation and Meals

Seven nights of accommodation are included at the selected price level. The package is offered on a half-board basis, with breakfast and dinner at the hotels, subject to arrival and departure times. Hotel names are confirmed before booking and depend on availability. Room upgrades can be requested at an extra cost.

Responsible Travel

The tour gives preference to locally managed accommodation and services where suitable options are available. Guests are encouraged to refill drinking bottles, reduce single-use plastic, respect temple customs, keep a safe distance from animals, and never ask safari drivers to chase or block wildlife.

Important Information

  • The starting prices are per person and based on two guests sharing one room.

  • A solo supplement of about 30 percent normally applies. The final price depends on travel dates, room availability, and requested changes.

  • Train times, carriage classes, and seat availability are controlled by Sri Lanka Railways. If the planned train cannot operate, a road transfer or the best available alternative will be arranged.

  • Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Safari plans may change because of weather, park rules, or temporary park closures.

  • Seasonal whale-watching can be requested at an extra cost. It normally requires an early morning start, depends on sea conditions, and may replace part of the final-day programme.

  • A late-afternoon or evening departure is best for completing the Galle visit on Day 8. For an early flight, the route will be shortened to allow enough airport travel and check-in time.

Day-by-day route

Day 1

Arrival and Transfer to Sigiriya

Meet your driver-guide at Bandaranaike International Airport and travel to Sigiriya. The drive normally takes about four hours but may be longer in traffic. Pass villages, farms, and paddy fields before checking in for your first night. The evening is free to rest or take a short walk near the hotel. Overnight in Sigiriya.

Day 2

Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Polonnaruwa

Start early and climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress before the hottest part of the day. See the water gardens, ancient frescoes, the Lion’s Paw entrance, and views from the summit. Continue to Polonnaruwa to explore the former royal capital, including palace ruins, the Sacred Quadrangle, and the Gal Vihara stone Buddha statues. Exploring by bicycle can be arranged at extra cost. Return to Sigiriya for the night.

Day 3

Dambulla Cave Temple and Kandy

Travel to Dambulla and visit its five main cave shrines, which contain Buddhist statues and colourful wall paintings. Continue through the central region to Kandy. An optional spice garden stop can be added if requested. After checking in, enjoy free time beside Kandy Lake or visit the local market. Overnight in Kandy.

Day 4

Kandy Temples and Gardens

Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and learn why it is one of Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist sites. Continue to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya for a relaxed walk among palms, orchids, and tropical trees. The rest of the day is free. An evening Kandyan cultural show can be arranged at extra cost. Overnight in Kandy.

Day 5

Scenic Train Journey to Ella

Board the train from Kandy towards Ella for a journey through mountains, tea estates, forests, and small hill-country stations. The ride usually takes six to seven hours, depending on the railway schedule. After reaching Ella, check in and relax. If there is enough daylight, take a short walk to Little Adam’s Peak or view Nine Arch Bridge. Overnight in Ella.

Day 6

Ella, Ravana Falls, and Yala Safari

Leave Ella and stop at Ravana Falls when road and weather conditions allow. Continue to the Yala area and prepare for an afternoon jeep safari. Search for elephants, deer, crocodiles, water buffalo, monkeys, and many bird species. Leopards and sloth bears live in the park but are difficult to see, so sightings cannot be promised. Overnight near Yala National Park.

Day 7

Yala to Mirissa

After breakfast, travel west along the southern side of the island to Mirissa. Check in and spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach or exploring the local area. Swimming depends on waves, currents, and local safety advice. An additional early safari may be possible at extra cost but will make this a longer travel day. Overnight in Mirissa.

Day 8

Galle Fort and Departure

Travel from Mirissa to Galle and walk through the historic fort area. See the old ramparts, lighthouse, churches, colonial streets, and ocean views. Continue to Colombo or Bandaranaike International Airport for departure. The Galle visit requires a suitably late flight; for an early departure, the schedule will be adjusted and the airport transfer will take priority.
