Yes, the Kandy to Ella train is one of Sri Lanka's best experiences, passing tea estates, cloud forest and waterfalls. The full ride takes around 6 to 8 hours, and delays are common. If time is tight, ride only from Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) to Ella. It is shorter and covers most of the classic scenery.

The scenery is at its best roughly between Nanu Oya, Pattipola, Haputale and Ella. The line climbs to the highest point on the railway before dropping into the Ella valley (Pattipola, at about 1,890 m, is the highest station on the network).
Which class to book
First class reserved: Air-conditioned with an assigned seat, but the windows are usually sealed, so views and photos suffer.
Second class reserved: Assigned seat and opening windows. For most travellers, this is the best balance.
Unreserved (second or third class): Cheapest, but you may stand for hours on busy days.
Reserved seats sell out quickly in peak season (December–April) and around Sri Lankan holidays. Book through Sri Lanka Railways' official online system or at station counters. Check how far ahead seats are released, typically about 30 days, but confirm on the booking site. Fares change, so check the current tariff before you travel. Practical tips
Take a morning train so you reach the best section in daylight.
Keep phones and bodies inside the carriage, especially near tunnels.
Bring a light jacket. The hill country gets cool, and rain can blow in through open windows.
