Allow about US$2,500 for two adults on a comfortable 10-day private trip in Sri Lanka, before international flights. If the room is closer to the top of the mid-range band, or you add Anuradhapura and a second safari, allow up to about US$3,200. A solo traveller should allow about US$1,800 to US$2,400 for the same 10 days, because the car is paid once and does not get cheaper when you travel alone.
That is a set-aside figure, built from published driver rates, the Central Cultural Fund ticket table, and meal bands we already use in our Sri Lanka trip cost guide. It is a planning total for October and November 2026. Gates, parks, and hotels change their prices, so confirm the big tickets before you travel.
The 10-day example, two adults
The worked example is two adults, 10 days with a car and driver, and 9 nights in one room. The car is our Toyota Prius hybrid at US$75 a day. The room is set at US$90 a night, inside the US$50 to US$150 mid-range band in the cost guide. Meals mix local food with one restaurant meal.
| Item | How it is counted | US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Car and driver, 10 days | Prius at US$75 a day. Driver's overnight stay included. 150 km a day included, then US$0.32 per extra kilometre. | 750 |
| Hotel room, 9 nights | Example at US$90 a night, inside the published mid-range band of US$50 to US$150 per room. | 810 |
| Meals, two people, 10 days | About US$40 a day for both. A local rice-and-curry meal is about US$2 to US$6. A main course at a visitor restaurant is about US$7 to US$18. | 400 |
| Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa | Foreign-adult full tickets, US$35 and US$30, for two people. Central Cultural Fund table, 14 October 2026. | 130 |
| One half-day safari | About US$75 per person with the jeep and taxes, from our Yala safari guide. Two adults. | 150 |
| Cash buffer | Tolls, parking, a tip, extra kilometres, and one small ticket the day rate does not cover. | 250 |
| On-island allow | Before flights, insurance, and shopping. | 2,490 |
Round that to about US$2,500. The US$200 deposit on the Prius is held and returned. Leave it out of the spending money.
What moves the total
The room is the swing factor. Nine nights at US$50 is US$450. Nine nights at US$150 is US$1,350. That US$900 gap is larger than the safari and both cultural tickets put together.
A second cultural site adds a known amount. Anuradhapura is US$30 per foreign adult on the same Cultural Fund table, so US$60 for two. A second half-day safari is another US$150 or so for two, if the per-person figure in the Yala ticket guide still holds. The park receipt and the jeep are separate charges unless a quote lists both.
The car is a smaller swing on a shared trip. Published day rates on this site run from US$58 for a Suzuki Alto to US$115 for a Toyota Prado. Ten days in the Alto is US$580. Ten days in the Prado is US$1,150. Two people splitting a Prius pay US$37.50 each per day for the car and driver. One person pays the full US$75.
For a 14-day trip on the same pattern, add four driver days (US$300 on the Prius), four hotel nights (US$360 at the US$90 example), and four days of meals (about US$160 for two). The tickets stay the same unless the extra days add another park. Allow roughly US$800 to US$1,000 more than the 10-day figure.
Tickets you can price from the official table
The Central Cultural Fund ticket page was last updated on 14 October 2026, at 7:03 am, using 336 Sri Lankan rupees per US dollar. Foreign-adult full tickets on that table:
- Sigiriya, US$35 (half ticket US$20)
- Polonnaruwa, US$30 (half ticket US$15)
- Anuradhapura, US$30 (half ticket US$15)
- Galle museum, US$6
- Dambulla museum, US$3
- Kandy Medawasala, US$1.50
The page lists a half ticket and does not define who qualifies, so ask at the window before you assume a child or a regional passport pays the lower figure. The Dambulla line is the museum. The cave temple is charged separately, so allow extra and check that price on the day. Galle Fort's ramparts are not on this paid list. The museum is.
Carry the passport. The fund's dollar prices are collected in rupees at the rate in force, which will have moved on from the 336 rupees published in October.
The visa line is either nothing or US$50
From 25 May 2026, the Department of Immigration lists 40 countries whose nationals can obtain a 30-day tourist ETA free of charge. The list includes Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Singapore and Seychelles are also free for 30 days, and the Maldives for 90 days. Everyone on that list still has to apply. The fee is waived. The application is not.
For other nationalities the same ETA fee page charges US$50 for a tourist ETA submitted online, or US$60 on arrival. South Asian applicants pay US$20 online or US$25 on arrival. Children of any nationality under 12 are free for up to 30 days. A stay past 30 days needs an extension, and that fee depends on nationality. Fees paid before 25 May 2026 were not refunded when the waiver started.
Put US$0 or US$50 per adult on top of the on-island allow. Do not fold a paid ETA into the US$2,500 if your passport is on the free list, and do not leave it out if it is not.
What the day rate leaves for cash
On the Prius, and on the Alto beside it, the day rate includes the driver and the driver's overnight stay. It does not include tolls or parking. Expressway tolls between Colombo and the south coast, or up toward the hills, come out of the cash buffer. So does a short tuk-tuk when the car is parked for the evening.
One hundred and fifty kilometres a day is enough for a classic circuit if the long transfers are spread out. Colombo to Kandy is a bit over 100 km. A single day that runs Colombo to the east coast will pass the cap. Extra kilometres on the Prius are US$0.32. One hundred extra kilometres is US$32, which is why the buffer is US$250 and not a token US$20.
A reserved seat on the hill-country train is a small line next to the car. Fares depend on class and on whether that section is running. Check the railway's own reservation site when you book, and read our Kandy to Ella class guide before you pay a reseller.
If you are not hiring a driver
The US$2,500 figure is for a private car. Travellers on buses and trains should use the daily bands in the cost guide: about US$40 to US$65 per person per day at the budget end, about US$90 to US$160 in the middle, and US$250 and above at the top, for two people sharing a room. Those bands exclude flights, insurance, shopping, and entrance tickets. Ten days at the middle of the budget band is about US$500 per person before tickets. The private driver is the line that changes the arithmetic.
If you would rather have the route, the car, and the hotels set before you fly, the private tour pages are priced as packages. Use this article to check that a package is in the same range as the pieces, not as a substitute for reading what the package includes.
