When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination. The south, west and hill country are best December to April, and the east coast is best May to September.
The best time to visit Sri Lanka depends on where you are going. The south and west coasts and the hill country are driest from December to April. The east coast, including Arugam Bay and Trincomalee, is best from May to September. Because two monsoons hit opposite coasts, part of the island is in season every month.

October and November are inter-monsoon months, when afternoon rain is possible almost anywhere. The rain usually comes in heavy bursts rather than all day.
Seasonal highlights
Whale watching: Mirissa, roughly December to April. Trincomalee, roughly May to October.
Surfing: The south coast (Weligama, Hiriketiya) is best November to April. Arugam Bay is best about May to September.
Adam's Peak (Sri Pada): The pilgrimage season runs from the December (Unduvap) full moon to the May (Vesak) full moon.
Safaris: Yala and Udawalawe run all year, but Yala usually closes for several weeks around September–October for the dry-season break (check current dates with the Department of Wildlife Conservation).
Peak season, prices and quieter weeks
December to March is peak season on the south coast. Hotel rates are highest and need booking early, especially around Christmas and New Year. April and November are good shoulder months, with fewer crowds and some rain risk.
