Arugam Bay

About

Arugam Bay is a crescent-shaped bay in the Ampara District, a few kilometres south of Pottuvil. It is one of Sri Lanka’s best-known surfing destinations, with a relaxed beachfront area of guesthouses, cafes, surf schools and small shops. Fishing remains part of local life, and traditional boats can often be seen along the shore.

The town is busiest during the east-coast surf season. Outside that period, Arugam Bay is much quieter and some tourism businesses close. The surrounding area includes lagoons, Buddhist sites, farming villages and wildlife habitats, making the bay a useful base for exploring the southeast coast.

Highlights

• Watch experienced surfers at Main Point, the well-known right-hand break at the southern end of the bay. Beginners should take a lesson and use a break suited to the day’s conditions.

• Explore other surf areas such as Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm. Wave size, currents and access can change with the weather and season.

• Visit Muhudu Maha Viharaya near Pottuvil, an ancient Buddhist site set beside coastal dunes.

• Take a boat trip on Pottuvil Lagoon with an established local operator to see wetland scenery and birdlife. Wildlife may also be present, but sightings are never guaranteed.

• Plan a safari in Kumana National Park, which is especially known for birds. Elephants, crocodiles and other animals live in the wider area, while leopard sightings are uncommon and cannot be promised.

• Visit Elephant Rock with a knowledgeable local guide. The route can be isolated, and conditions around nearby waterways can change.

When to visit

April to October is the main visitor and surf season. Surf is usually most consistent from May to September, with July and August among the busiest months. Conditions vary from year to year, so surfers should check a current forecast.

The northeast monsoon brings more rain and rougher sea conditions, especially from November to February. This is the quiet season, and some hotels, restaurants and surf businesses may close or reduce their services.

How to get there

Arugam Bay is reached by road and does not have a railway station. A private car or transfer from Colombo or Bandaranaike International Airport usually takes about 8 to 10 hours, depending on traffic, stops and the route.

Long-distance buses serve Pottuvil, where travellers can continue the final few kilometres by tuk-tuk or local transport. Another option is to travel by train to Ella or Badulla and complete the journey by road. The drive from Ella generally takes about 3 to 4 hours. Public transport schedules can change, so confirm connections before travelling.

Travel tips

• Carry some cash for small cafes, tuk-tuks and surf rentals. Card facilities and ATM service can be limited or unreliable.

• Use sun protection and drink plenty of water. A rash vest is useful for surfing.

• Ask local surf instructors about currents, reefs and the right break for your ability. Beach rescue services are limited.

• Do not swim in lagoons, estuaries or unfamiliar inland waterways because crocodiles may be present.

• Keep a safe distance from wild elephants and never block or approach them for photographs.

• Dress modestly away from the beach and cover shoulders and knees when visiting Buddhist sites.

• Use a local guide for isolated viewpoints and avoid walking alone in remote areas after dark.

• Book accommodation early for July and August, but check which businesses are open if travelling in the low season.
