How many days do you need in Sri Lanka for a first trip?
Plan 10 to 14 days for a first trip to Sri Lanka. With 7 days, focus on two regions, such as Sigiriya and Kandy plus the hill country or south coast.
For a first trip to Sri Lanka, plan 10 to 14 days. That is enough for the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya and Dambulla), Kandy, the tea country around Ella, a safari and a few beach days on the south coast without spending every day in a car. With 7 days, choose two regions. With 3 to 5 days, choose one.

Why Sri Lanka takes longer than the map suggests
Sri Lanka is small, but roads are slow outside the expressways. Hill-country roads are winding, and towns run into one another along the coast. Some typical timings:
Airport to the south coast: 2.5 to 5 hours by private car, depending on how far east you are going.
Kandy to Ella by train: around 6 to 8 hours, and delays are common.
Sigiriya to Kandy: roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road.
A good rule of thumb is to stay at least two nights in each base and keep driving days under 4 to 5 hours.
