Hiriketiya & Weligama

About

Hiriketiya and Weligama are two separate beach destinations in Sri Lanka's Southern Province. Weligama has a broad sandy bay, a busy town centre and many surf schools. Hiriketiya is a much smaller horseshoe-shaped bay beside Dikwella, with palm trees, cafes and a compact beach atmosphere.

The two places are roughly 40 km apart by road, and the drive usually takes about one hour depending on traffic. Weligama is the easier base for public transport and first-time surf lessons. Hiriketiya suits travellers looking for a smaller cove, although it can become crowded during the main season.

When to visit

December to April usually brings the driest weather and more settled conditions on the south coast. These months are also the busiest, especially around Christmas, New Year and weekends. November and April can be good transition months, but rain and sea conditions vary.

From May to October, the southwest monsoon can bring stronger wind, rain and rougher water. Some businesses reduce their opening hours during quieter months. Surf and swimming conditions change daily, so check local advice before entering the sea.

How to get there

Weligama is served by coastal trains and buses from Colombo, Galle and Matara. A train from Colombo Fort commonly takes about three to four hours, depending on the service. By private vehicle, allow roughly two to three hours from central Colombo and about two and a half to three and a half hours from Bandaranaike International Airport, depending on traffic and the expressway connection.

Hiriketiya does not have a station beside the beach. Travellers can continue by taxi, tuk-tuk or bus from Matara, Dikwella, Wewrukannala or Beliatta. Train services to the smaller stations are limited, so check the current timetable. A direct airport transfer to Hiriketiya commonly takes around three to four hours. The road journey between Weligama and Hiriketiya usually takes about one hour.

• Choose Weligama for easier transport, a wider choice of accommodation and beginner surf lessons.

• Book Hiriketiya accommodation early during the December to April high season.

• Use a qualified surf instructor and choose equipment suitable for your experience.

• Do not assume the whole of Hiriketiya Bay is safe for beginners; reef sections, waves and currents require care.

• Swim only when conditions are suitable and follow local safety advice.

• Carry some cash because small cafes, buses and tuk-tuks may not accept cards.

• Only ride a scooter if you have the required permit, insurance, helmet and experience in local traffic.
