Galle

Galle is a historic port city on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, in the Southern Province, about 120 km south of Colombo. It is best known for Galle Fort, part of the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications. The fort's ocean-facing ramparts, lighthouse, colonial streets, cafes and shops are easy to explore on foot in half a day. Visit from December to April for the driest weather, and walk in the early morning or after 3:30 PM. About Galle

The Portuguese built the first fort in the 16th century. The Dutch greatly expanded its walls and streets in the 17th century, and the British later used it while keeping much of the earlier layout. Today Galle Fort is still a living neighbourhood, with homes, schools, places of worship, museums, small hotels, galleries and restaurants inside the walls.

Where Galle fits in a Sri Lanka tour

Galle is usually the coastal finale of a loop, after Yala and Mirissa and before Bentota or Colombo. It is also an easy day trip from Colombo or the south-coast beaches.

How to get there

By car with driver: the Southern Expressway is the quickest route from Colombo and Bandaranaike International Airport. From central Colombo it usually takes about 2 hours, depending on traffic and your starting point. See car with driver hire. By train: coastal trains from Colombo Fort take about 2–3 hours, with sea views on parts of the route. Reserved seats can sell out in busy periods. By bus: express buses connect Colombo and Galle. Last stretch: Galle Fort is a short walk or tuk-tuk ride from Galle railway station and the main bus terminal.

Travel tips

There is no general entrance fee to walk around Galle Fort. Museums and some attractions charge separately.
Wear comfortable shoes, because some rampart paths are uneven.
Carry water, sunscreen and a hat, as there is little shade on the walls.
Keep back from unprotected rampart edges and supervise children closely, especially in wind or rain.
Dress modestly and remove footwear where required at active places of worship.
